Bintan is part of the Riau Archipelago in Indonesia. Its entire eastern coastline is in a Marine Protected Area and unfortunately is subject to above average levels of ocean plastic pollution. Seven Clean Seas employs a cleanup crew of 22 to remove ghost nets, high value and low value plastics from the marine environment, focussing on beaches, mangroves, river systems and around stilted sea gypsy communities. This project provides employment opportunities, champions female involvement, supports local conservation efforts, educates local communities and removes huge quantities of ocean plastic pollution. Now we aim to expand our operations to other regions in Indonesia and into China, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Sri Lanka (the seven top plastic leakage locations).
