3RI PILOT PROJECTS
Insights, data and information collected from the pilot projects will help in the development of a reliable and transparent Plastic Standard
OUR PILOT PROJECTS
Twenty-four projects on six continents piloted the Plastic Waste Reduction Standard. Pilots helped us understand how the Standard would be used in practice and enabled us to work through issues that only come up through application by actual waste collection and recycling activities.
The pilot projects share the goal of reducing plastic waste pollution. Activities promoted by pilot projects include, among others, plastic waste recovery from the environment by informal actors, development of infrastructure for plastic waste collection and sorting, and development of mechanical and chemical recycling facilities.
For descriptions of the pilot projects, browse through the map and click any of the icons. The different colored icons represent different pilot project streams: blue icons represent our corporate pilot projects, red icons represent external pilot projects, and green icons represent the independent testing projects.

Founded by 2 ex-McKinsey consultants and current WWF/SystemIQ consultants, Plastic Loop helps organizations to fulfill their plastic reduction and recycling goals. Plastic Loop plans to steer significant investment into the underfunded waste management sector in Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. Setting up material recovery facilities on unsanitary landfills and employing former waste pickers will […]
learn morePaddle for Plastic Campaign
The Paddle for Plastic Campaign was launched in 2017 to raise awareness and enable community groups and individuals alike to start recovering plastic from otherwise inaccessible stretches of coastline and waterways by means of our 100% recycled plastic kayaks made by incorporating marine plastics. Since then the campaign went viral after featuring on prime-time BBC’s […]
learn moreScaling of Recycling Capacity of Post-Consumer Plastic film & Bottles
Since 2017, Myanmar Recycles (MR) has provided a critical solution to Myanmar’s growing contaminated plastic waste problem. MR has developed a commercial market for plastic recycling with an initial focus on difficult-to-collect and recycle post-consumer plastic film and HDPE containers. MR collects, sorts, and washes this waste, then pelletizes and sells it as plastic resin. […]
learn moreClariter (The NL)
Clariter is a global clean-tech company that has created a revolutionary process which addresses the world’s plastic waste problem. Since its formation in 2003, Clariter’s technology has provided a new alternative for plastic recycling. While the industry is currently turning plastic into new plastic, energy, or fuel, Clariter’s unique process transforms plastic waste into high-value, […]
learn moreReciclar en Caja
Reciclar en Caja is a new project in Medellin, Colombia, to increase the recovery and recycling rate of post consumer beverage cartons (herein, UBC). The project is led by TetraPak, under the company Circular Economy Strategy. learn moreRecycling Fleet Expansion in Haiti
This project funds a fleet of trucks to move recyclable material from collection and sorting centers to recycling facilities, bolstering volumes of materials that are collected and recycled in Haiti. Funding enables a consistent stream of material for processing and export.
learn moreRecovery and Recycling of Non-Biodegradable Plastic Wastes to Combustible Oil Fuel
This project collects and converts non-biodegradable plastic waste into a reusable form of fuel through a de-polymerization process in India. “De-polymerization” involves thermal heat induction using electrical energy for the conversion of plastic into oils by gas chromatography. The project helps bring a sustainable way of managing plastic waste.
learn moreProject Stop
Muncar is coastal fishing community in Banyuwangi, Indonesia. With minimal waste services in place, the majority of citizens are forced to dump their waste directly into the environment. Muncar was chosen as the first PROJECT STOP location due to the seriousness of the challenge, coupled with strong leadership and environmental commitment at national, regency and local levels.According […]
learn moreOcean Packaging Recovery Systems
Bintan is part of the Riau Archipelago in Indonesia. Its entire eastern coastline is in a Marine Protected Area and unfortunately is subject to above average levels of ocean plastic pollution. Seven Clean Seas employs a cleanup crew of 22 to remove ghost nets, high value and low value plastics from the marine environment, focussing […]
learn morePemerintah Desa Les Plastic Recovery and Recycling Project
This project recovers post-use plastic from households, businesses and programs in the community which it mechanically recycles into plastic shreds using the Plastic Collective mobile Shruder Recycling Station.
